Danny Helmich Headshot

Executive Director

Danny has been with the Y for more than six years. Although he has a bachelor’s degree in accounting and worked several years in the business management field, his heart wasn’t in it. He knew he wanted to be in fitness and health, which brought him to the Y.

He has worn many hats in his career here, including membership engagement director, healthy living coach, group exercise instructor, personal trainer and community initiatives director. He has also worked at several locations across the metro.

Danny has a passion for whole body wellness and feels strongly that a healthy lifestyle should be available to everyone. In his current role, he and his fitness staff work to design and maintain a diverse schedule of activities, classes and programs for members, no matter their ability or fitness level.

He has implemented many healthy eating classes, including Salsa Sabor Y Salud, a program designed for the Hispanic community focusing on food and fitness, and Y Weight, a program focusing on healthy eating designed for all to enjoy.

A lifelong athlete, Danny has a passion to provide kids in his community an opportunity to play sports. He developed a sports program -- including soccer, football and basketball -- for his local Y where one had been missing for years, and created a sports programming partnerships with Wyandotte County Parks and Recreation.

Danny’s love of people and being involved in improving his community has made him never look back on his decision to leave accounting behind.

Crystal Babb Headshot

Healthy Living Director

Helping others lead a healthy lifestyle is important to Crystal. She has been doing that at the Y since August 2016. She is a certified lifestyle coach for diabetes prevention and a personal trainer. She has certifications from ACE (American Council on Exercise) and in CPR/AED/First Aid. She has also worked at the Greater Birmingham Y as group exercise coordinator.

Crystal’s position at the Y connects her with an amazing community of like-minded people who come together to experience fitness, fellowship and fun all under one roof. It’s the vibrancy of the members that lifts her spirits daily and propels Crystal to create and foster better experiences, programs and opportunities for them to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Growing up in Bonner Springs, she graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in journalism and mass communications with a focus on public relations. Outside of the Y, Crystal is involved in organic gardening and the urban farming network. She also volunteers for Cultivate KC. Appreciating the power of reading, she often tutors adults and youth. She also enjoys painting and has assisted with large local mural projects.

Crystal is grateful for all the Olathe Y staff, especially the healthy living team, for welcoming her with open arms and minds.
