June is National Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Worldwide, more than 55 million people are living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Did you know that studies have shown that physical activity reduces the risk of cognitive decline? At the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, we promote the importance of physical activity at any age! Just a little bit of activity can go a long way in helping improve brain health. Check out some of our great offerings below, which can be used a great start on your health and wellness journey:

Active Older Adult Group Exercise and Water Fitness Classes

We’re committed to making sure every member of our community has access to the resources they need to incorporate exercise into their daily routine for a healthier, happier lifestyle. That's why we offer a variety of Active Older Adults (AOA) programs designed to keep seniors active as they grow in mind, spirit and body. Find a class for you.

COMET Study

Could exercise improve brain health? You can help find the answer at the Y. The YMCA of Greater Kansas City partners with the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center for Combined Exercise Trials (COMET studies). Researchers are seeking 280 people, ages 65 to 80, to participate by exercising under the guidance of a personal trainer for one year. Participation in the study includes a paid gym membership. Most exercise sessions will take place at a YMCA location. Call 913.588.0555 option 1 or visit learn more on KU's website
