The renovation of the Mark Teahen Family Baseball Field is complete! To celebrate, we hosted a rededication on August 31 for the Mark Teahen Family Baseball Field. It marked a special moment for the Teahen family — who was in attendance and helped shape the YMCA Challenger program — as well as many, many Challenger families and buddies at the Fred and Shirley Pryor YMCA Challenger Sports Complex.
Teahen is a former Kansas City Royals infielder and has served as Challenger spokesman and supported the program since it began in 2006.
Construction on the field began in March 2023 and was completed in late June 2023. BHC Engineering worked on run-off and stormwater allocation to eliminate a previous water collection issue. They then rebuilt the field with a rubberized surface and level playing area and dugouts.
Thanks to Platte County, Platte County R-3 School District and Dehaemers Family Charitable Trust for making this renovation project possible. Also, thanks to our construction partner, BHC Engineering.
Building New Dreams
To help make sure YMCA Challenger programs are here for young people for years to come, we now have an endowment fund thanks to Susie Haake, a passionate supporter of inclusion initiatives at the YMCA of Greater Kansas City who fought for accessibility throughout the community. When she passed away in September 2022, she left a gift to the YMCA Challenger program to begin the endowment. Her kindness and commitment will be felt well into the future.
If you would like to learn more about how you can honor Susie’s legacy and support Challenger kids and young adults with a gift to the endowment, be sure to fill out this form to tell us a little more about yourself and someone will follow up with you soon.
We hope those who joined us enjoyed this great night for a great cause. Be sure to check out our Google Photos album for event photos!
