Healthy Kids, Stronger KC: Why Partnership Matters
YMCA Healthy Kids Day, presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, brought families together at the North Kansas City YMCA for a day full of movement, connection, resources and joy. In this episode of The Movement, Mark Hulet talked with Blue KC leaders Macaela Stephenson and Miranda Coffey about why investing in kids and families helps build a healthier Kansas City.
Healthy Kids Day at the Y was buzzing with energy: families arriving, kids exploring activities, community partners sharing resources, and even the Kansas City Chiefs, KC Wolf making a special appearance. It was the kind of day where fun and purpose showed up wearing the same sneakers.
For Blue KC, partnering with the YMCA was a natural fit. Macaela Stephenson shared that both organizations care deeply about the health of Kansas City, not just through programs or services, but by creating opportunities for families to connect, play and belong.
Miranda Coffey explained that health happens far beyond a doctor’s office. It happens in neighborhoods, schools, homes, parks, and trusted community spaces like the Y. Events like Healthy Kids Day help families discover resources, try new activities, and see what is available right in their own community.
The conversation also highlighted the importance of looking at kids’ health in a complete way. Physical activity matters, but so do mental health, belonging, confidence, access to healthy food, and supportive adults who encourage kids to keep moving, growing, and trying new things.
And the best reviewers of the day? Kids themselves. Finnlee loved the STEAM activities and Teen Tech Center, while Frankie was excited about planting seeds to take home and enjoying the sports activities. Their joy captured exactly what Healthy Kids Day is all about.
When trusted organizations like the Y and Blue KC come together, families gain more than a fun day. They gain access, encouragement, and connection.
Healthy Kids Day is a reminder that a stronger Kansas City starts with healthy kids, supported families, and community partners working together.
