As we celebrate 165 Years of Impact: 165 Years Ahead, the YMCA of Greater Kansas City continues to be a cornerstone of community growth, resilience, and inclusivity. One location that truly embodies these values is the Cleaver Family YMCA on Troost Avenue, a place where lives are transformed, stories are shared, and hope is ignited.

The Cleaver Family YMCA is more than just a building—it’s a symbol of progress. Located on Troost Avenue, historically known as a dividing line in Kansas City, this branch has defined its purpose by creating an inclusive, welcoming space for all.
“Troost Avenue is a place with a deep history, but the Cleaver Family YMCA has rewritten that narrative,” said Mark Hulet, President and CEO, YMCA of Greater Kansas City. “It’s become a beacon of hope and connection for the entire community.”
JuVonda Whitney’s Inspiring Journey

Among the many stories of transformation, JuVonda Whitney’s journey stands out. After facing significant personal tragedies, JuVonda turned to the YMCA for support. What she found was more than a fitness facility—it was a community that wrapped her in care, provided opportunities, and helped her rediscover her purpose.
“Walking into the Y felt like finding a second family,” JuVonda shared. “It gave me the tools to rebuild my life, and now I want to inspire others to do the same.”
Her grandson, Nicholas, is another shining example of the YMCA’s impact. Through youth programs and mentorship at the Cleaver Family YMCA, Nicholas continues to grow and thrive in their youth programs.
A Mission That Resonates

At its core, the YMCA is built on the pillars of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. These values are evident in every program and every story shared at the Cleaver Family YMCA.
After her own transformation, JuVonda joined the team as a group fitness instructor, proving that it’s never too late to make a difference.
“I want others to know they’re capable of so much more than they realize,” JuVonda said. “If I can do it, so can they.”
