Cold and Flue Season

Winter is here, and that means it is officially cold and flu season. The best way to avoid getting sick is to help prevent the spread of germs.

If you follow some of the tips below, your chances of catching a cold or the flu can go down.

  1. Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. In our Y centers, hand sanitizer is available for you to use, in addition use the sinks and soap in the restrooms and locker rooms.
  2. Wipe down equipment at our Y centers after you use it. Look for spray bottles of cleaner and paper towels in our wellness areas.
  3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  4. Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  5. Practice good health habits. Get plenty of exercise and sleep, which can boost your immune system. Manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat healthy food.
  6. Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze.
  7. If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
