English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes

English as a Second Language classes develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for work, education and everyday communication! This class is for beginner English language learners with a focus on common phrases and building and a foundational English proficiency.

Class Schedule

Free class for older adults who are MEMBERS of the Y and are concerned about falling or have fallen or those who want to increase activity and exercise. Participant must be able to walk independently (a cane is okay). The class is not appropriate for those with dementia. Learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increased activity, improve balance, flexibility and strength, and make changes at home to reduce fall risk.

Class occurs every Monday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. September 11 through October 30.

The Y is working to help ensure that our community has access to fresh, nutritious food through Mobile Pantry food distribution programs in partnership with Harvesters. The programs address a growing need for those unsure where their next meal will come from. 

Participants stay in their vehicles while volunteers load fresh produce, canned goods and a variety of other non-perishable items into their vehicles. All in need are welcome. This Mobile Food Pantry occurs on the fourth Friday of each month at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Join us at Linwood YMCA for Teen Night every fourth Friday! This event is for grades 6th through 12th. Activities include dinner, swimming, basketball, volleyball, arts and crafts, board games and a monthly theme activity. This is a FREE event for teens. 
 

Red Cross Lifeguard Course

A lifeguard does chest compressions on a CPR dummy while another prepares a breathing valve for mouth resuscitation.

Gain the skills to save a life in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training. In this course for ages 15 and older, learn how to keep people safe in and around the pool. The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to guard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and how to take action to help those in danger when necessary. The course includes accident prevention, guarding techniques, pool management and even more safety skills.

Join us for a Fall Prevention Lunch and Learn hosted by the Healthcare Resort of Olathe. Jacob Campbell will present what happens after a fall, what makes you likely to fall, and what we can do to prevent falls and exercises that improve your strength and balance. The Y offers Certified Personal Training (CPT) instruction, accredited through NASM that can help you become a nationally-certified trainer. Becoming a CPT can lead to rewarding work in health and fitness, helping make a difference in people’s lives. Register by September 30, 2023.
