James B. Nutter, Sr., a longtime supporter, major donor and friend of the Y, died July 7, 2017. Most recently the YMCA of Greater Kansas City recognized him during the ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Linwood YMCA/James B. Nutter, Sr. Community Center on February 20, 2017.

“He will be missed in KC in many ways, and our community and Y are better because of James B. Nutter and his 89 years of life caring for others,” said David Byrd, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Kansas City. “He loved our community, and he truly had a huge heart for children and families in need and supported many community causes. Our Y keeps the Nutter family in our thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time.”

Nutter had participated in the Y throughout his youth and teen years. 

“His generosity has really blessed so many people in and throughout the community,” said Stephenie Smith, executive director of the Linwood YMCA/James B. Nutter, Sr. Community Center. “It takes courageous individuals, people who have a heart of service, to help lead the way.”

The Linwood YMCA/James B. Nutter, Sr. Community Center continues to provide a place for youth and teens to thrive.

In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Nutter was the founder and chairman of James B. Nutter & Company, a mortgage banking firm in Kansas City, Mo. His company was one of the first to lend to minorities and single women in the 1950s and 60s. It grew and is now one of the oldest and largest family-owned and operated mortgage lending firms in the United States.
