The YMCA of Greater Kansas City joins the community in remembering William H. “Bill” Dunn Sr., following his passing on May 31, 2026. His leadership, generosity and vision helped shape Kansas City for generations.

As a longtime partner and supporter of the YMCA, Dunn believed deeply in the power of community spaces to bring people together and change lives. Through decades of partnership with JE Dunn, his impact can be seen and felt across YMCA communities throughout Greater Kansas City.

Reflecting on Dunn's Legacy

YMCA of Greater Kansas City President and CEO Mark Hulet shared the following reflection on Dunn’s life and legacy:

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Dunn Sr., a true Kansas City leader, builder, philanthropist, and friend of the YMCA.

Every time I had the opportunity to speak with Bill, he shared his passion for the Y. He often mentioned staying at the YMCA in Chicago after World War II - a story that reflected both his personal connection to our movement and his deep appreciation for the role the YMCA has played in people’s lives for generations.

Bill was kind, gracious, and a wonderful storyteller. He understood that buildings are never just buildings. They are places where community happens, where people belong, and where lives are changed.

Since 1998, JE Dunn has built and/or renovated 11 YMCA facilities for the YMCA of Greater Kansas City. That legacy is visible across our association, but more importantly, it is felt every day by the children, families, seniors, members, volunteers and communities who walk through those doors.

Bill’s impact on Kansas City is immeasurable, and his connection to the YMCA is one we will always remember with gratitude.

Our thoughts are with the Dunn family and all who loved and admired him. His story, generosity and commitment to building stronger communities will continue to inspire us.
