At the YMCA, we believe in building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. Our before and after-school program, Y Club, is more than just a place for students to spend time outside of school hours—it’s a space where children receive the support, encouragement, and tools they need to thrive. What makes Y Club truly unique is our commitment to behavioral and emotional support, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to grow, learn, and succeed.

In our latest episode of The Movement podcast, we share a heartwarming and powerful story that showcases the life-changing impact of the YMCA’s behavioral specialists—a critical component of our Youth Development Services. Thanks to funding from the Jackson County Children’s Services Fund and the Hall Family Foundation, the YMCA is able to provide behavior specialists who work directly with children, families, and staff to create positive, lasting change.

A Story of Transformation: Brecken’s Journey

This episode highlights the journey of Brecken, a young student in the Lee’s Summit School District, who faced significant emotional and behavioral challenges. Before joining Y Club, Brecken struggled with frequent outbursts, defiance, and difficulty regulating his emotions. Traditional approaches weren’t working—but that’s where the YMCA stepped in.

Sydney Smith, a YMCA Behavioral Specialist with the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, with her expertise and dedication, Sydney built a trusting relationship with Brecken, offering him the individualized support and encouragement he needed. By implementing specialized behavioral interventions, a structured yet flexible environment, and peer mentorship opportunities, Brecken slowly but surely began to develop self-regulation skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

Today, Brecken is thriving. He has leadership skills, strong friendships, and a newfound confidence that has positively transformed not only his life but also his family dynamics. His story is a testament to the power of targeted behavioral support and the commitment of YMCA staff to ensure every child has a chance to succeed.

The Power of Behavioral Support in Y Club

The YMCA’s behavioral specialists play a vital role in supporting children and families. Through trauma-informed care, emotional support strategies, and collaboration with schools and parents, these specialists provide:

✔ Tailored interventions specific to each child’s needs
✔ Professional training for Y Club staff to handle behavioral challenges with care and understanding
✔ Collaboration with families to implement effective strategies at home
✔ Safe, structured environments where children can develop emotional regulation and social skills

Programs like these set the YMCA apart, ensuring that no child is left behind. We are grateful to the Lee’s Summit School District, Jackson County Children’s Services Fund, and the Hall Family Foundation for their continued support in making these services possible.
