John Mikos, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, has accepted the position of president and CEO of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee in Nashville. He will remain in his current role in Kansas City through December 31, 2022.
“I’m so grateful for my time in Kansas City for the past nine years and proud of the work we have accomplished together,” Mikos said. “It’s been a unique privilege to serve as CEO particularly over the past two years, a defining moment in history as we navigated the pandemic together with innovative ideas and determination to serve the greatest needs of our Greater Kansas City community.”
Mikos joined the YMCA of Greater Kansas City as Chief Operating Officer in 2013, and became CEO in 2019.
During the pandemic, Mikos led the Y in forming multiple strategic collaborations with key stakeholders addressing the needs of the community. The YMCA’s community outreach efforts supported more than 2,400 students in full-day remote learning support. His advocacy led to the hundreds of school age children receiving child care and remote learning support in 2020 and 2021 at no cost to families.
In addition, under his leadership during the pandemic, food programs expanded with more than 118,000 meals distributed, more than 35,000 check-in calls to senior citizens to prevent social isolation, and more than 8,300 people vaccinated in YMCA hosted vaccination clinics.
As COO for the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, Mikos was Chair of the Kansas State Alliance of YMCAs, leading the collective public policy and advocacy efforts of 11 independent YMCA associations across Kansas to further the mission of the Y.
Mikos also served as an Operational Consultant in Community Integrated Health Strategies for YMCA of the USA in 2018, working to expand evidence-based programs to prevent and manage chronic disease in YMCAs across the country.
In his new position, Mikos will lead one of the top-10 largest YMCAs in the country. The YMCA of Middle Tennessee includes 14 family wellness centers, a 300-acre day- and resident-camp facility, the region's largest network of before- and after-school care sites and a number of community-based outreach programs for youth and adults.
“We are so grateful to John for his tireless efforts to strengthen the YMCA of Greater Kansas City’s community partnerships, to serve our community and lead our organization through unprecedented challenges during the pandemic, and know he will do great things for the YMCA of Middle Tennessee,” said John Passanisi, Chief Volunteer Officer for the YMCA of Greater Kansas City Board of Directors. “Our Board will be thoughtful about this leadership transition in Kansas City and will work closely with the executive team to ensure a smooth transition. As we look to the future, the Kansas City Y has great momentum to serve our members and strengthen operations, and that momentum will continue.”
