Powered by Volunteers – How One Neighbor Can Change a Community

December Podcast Blog Thumbnail Volunteers
At the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, our story has always been powered by people who say “yes.” For more than 165 years, volunteers have helped turn gyms into gathering spaces, food drives into lifelines, and neighborhood events into places of true belonging.

In this episode of The Movement, host Mark Hulet visits Platte County Community Center North to explore what volunteerism looks like today, and how one person can spark change. He’s joined by longtime volunteer and UnitedHealthcare partner Bill Gibson, along with Platte County Executive Director Michelle Ford.

Built on Volunteers

For the Y’s first 32 years in Kansas City, there were no staff, only volunteers. That legacy still fuels everything we do, from coaching and mentoring to food drives, holiday programs, and community events across the metro.

Volunteerism as a Calling

Bill’s journey with the Y began through UnitedHealthcare, offering year-round support to members navigating healthcare questions. His steady presence built trust, leading him to jump into block parties, Trunk or Treat, food drives, Active Older Adults events, and more across the Northland. What started as a work assignment quickly became a personal mission.

Michelle Ford, with more than 30 years of experience empowering volunteers, recognized Bill’s passion and invited him to join the Platte County Community Mission Board, where he later helped lead one of its most successful fundraising campaigns.

Michelle views volunteers as family, their energy rippling through youth sports, Challenger programs, and community events. Both Bill and Michelle see how volunteering transforms lives, changing the giver as much as the receiver.

Getting Started Is Easier Than You Think

Give an hour, a day, or help at one big event. Greet members, read to kids, coach youth sports, or support food distribution. The hardest part is starting.
