At the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, we believe belonging isn’t just a feeling — it’s a foundation for building a stronger community. Through programs like our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, we create spaces where everyone feels safe, valued, and empowered to reach their potential.
One of those stories belongs to Hemenegildo “Mene”.
A New Beginning in a New Country
When Mene arrived in the United States from the Dominican Republic, he didn’t speak a word of English. Every day was a challenge — from navigating the grocery store to communicating at work. But Mene had a vision for his future. He wanted to build a career, connect with people, and feel at home in his new community.
That journey began at the YMCA’s New American Welcome Center, where Mene met Program Coordinator Arecely Van Kirk. With her guidance and encouragement, Mene enrolled in our ESL program.
Learning English, Building Confidence
Mene committed to the program, completing four full rounds of ESL classes. Arecely saw firsthand how his determination and positive spirit inspired others in the class.
“From the first day, Mene worked hard,” Arecely shared. “He didn’t just want to learn English — he wanted to connect, to be part of the community.”
For Mene, graduating from the ESL program wasn’t just about language skills — it was about opening doors. He’s now working full-time in plumbing and construction, confidently communicating with coworkers and clients. He can handle daily life without needing a translator, and he’s proud to help others just as he was helped.

The Power of Belonging
North Kansas City YMCA Executive Director Andrea Toney has witnessed how programs like ESL create connections that extend far beyond the classroom. “When people walk through our doors and see they’re welcomed just as they are,” she says, “that’s when lives change.”
For Mene, that moment came when he realized he could advocate for himself at work and participate fully in community life. “I belong here now,” he says with a smile.
Celebrate Welcoming Week at the YMCA
This September, you can help keep the welcoming spirit alive. From September 12 to 21, all 10 YMCA of Greater Kansas City centers will host activities and events as part of Welcoming Week, a nationwide celebration that fosters understanding and connection among neighbors of all backgrounds.
Keep the Spirit of Welcoming Alive
Mene’s story is a powerful reminder that “Belonging Begins With Us” — not just during Welcoming Week, but every day. By supporting programs like ESL, volunteering your time, or simply greeting a newcomer with kindness, you can help create a stronger, more connected Kansas City.
