Inside the Y's year-round push to close the STEAM gap, and the open invitation to KC companies who want in.
On a hot July afternoon at Sunset Valley Elementary in Lee's Summit, summer day campers cut bendy straws, taped them into winding paths, and dropped a small ball in one end to watch "food" travel a homemade digestive system from mouth to, well… the other end.
It looked like play. That was the point. Somewhere between the giggles and the (anatomically accurate) pile of pretend poo on the table, those kids were doing science, engineering, math, and design, and one camper named Austin was already talking like a future surgeon. Medical school in his future? "Yeah, it is."
That moment is exactly what the YMCA of Greater Kansas City is building toward. And it doesn't stop when camp ends.
A Lab on Wheels and a Bigger Idea
The build came courtesy of the Missouri AfterSchool Network's STEAM Mobile Lab, a rolling classroom bringing hands-on STEAM, VR, drones, robots, 3D design, to kids across the state. MASN educator Richard Irwin calls STEAM a gateway: to careers, to confidence, to learning that failure isn't the end of the process, it's the middle of it.
But the mobile lab rolls out at the end of the week. The Y is there every single day.
STEAM Doesn't End in August
Summer day camp is just one chapter. When school starts, the Y's Youth Development team is in more than 90 school sites across the Kansas City metro, serving 3,500+ students in before and after school programs, where kids get homework help, healthy snacks, physical activity, and more STEAM, all coordinated with what they're learning in class.
Educators call it closing the STEAM gap, the reality that some kids don't get these experiences anywhere else. The Y exists to make sure they do. And because the Y is a nonprofit with scholarships and subsidy options, cost is never the reason a kid misses out.
The STEAM Alliance: Where KC Companies Come In
Kansas City is full of engineering firms and tech companies whose people use design thinking every day. This January, the Y brought 14 of those firms into one room and asked: what if you helped grow the next generation of your own workforce?
The result is the YMCA STEAM Alliance, where local companies can plug in however fits them best:
- Volunteers, like the engineers coaching campers through this summer's Carnival Week, where kids design and build their own carnival games using the real engineering design process
- STEAM kits and materials for programs across the metro
- Funding that keeps quality high and costs low for families
- Real-world design challenges straight from the industries that will one day hire these kids
The ask is simple: think big, start small. A few firms tried a few things this summer. The goal is dozens of partners, embedded year-round.
The Spark Is the Whole Point
Why does one kid building a straw digestive system matter? As the Y's Andi Gilbertson puts it, it's not about anatomy, it's about the spark. That "oh my gosh, I didn't know that" moment when learning becomes something a child owns.
