A new, 12-week program at Y locations throughout the metro is now open for registration to help community members lose weight. The YMCA’s Weight Loss Program helps people seeking a healthier weight achieve their goals by making small, modest changes to their daily behaviors. The program is open to Y members 18 and older.

"This program helps participants build skills for successful lifestyle changes," said Julie Solomon, senior vice president of community integrated health. "This is not a gimmick or a fad. This is guidance from a trained YMCA facilitator in a supportive group environment."

The YMCA Weight Loss Program is supported by a team of specialized trainers in weight loss, nutrition and physical activity.

Each weekly, one-hour session will help participants gain insights into physical activity and nutrition, and a better understanding of the obstacles and pitfalls that make losing weight (and keeping it off) such a challenge. At the end of the 12 weeks, facilitators will help participants chart a course for continued success. Participants will continue to receive guidance over the course of nine monthly follow-up meetings.

The supportive Y environment separates it from other weight loss options. Solomon said the Y prides itself on fostering a welcoming environment where members are respected and physically and emotionally safe. The group setting also provides accountability and a powerful incentive to effect change.

Y members save up to 50% on standard program rates. Discounts for Active Older Adults and financial assistance may be available. For more information and to register, visit KansasCityYMCA.org/YWeightLoss.
