Fred and Shirley Pryor YMCA Sports Complex
Explore a sports complex designed around the needs of athletes with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities. Accessible baseball, soccer and flag football fields give participants room to build skills and confidence, while an accessible playground welcomes families to play together. From the field surfaces to parking and restrooms, thoughtful features help athletes using wheelchairs and other mobility devices take part in the activities and friendships that make Challenger sports special.
The complex includes the Mark Teahen Challenger Baseball Field, the Trent Green Family Field and the American Family Insurance Field. A synthetic rubber baseball surface with flat bases supports wheelchairs and other mobility devices, and the dugout has no stairs or curbs. Synthetic grass turf provides a level surface for soccer and flag football, helping athletes focus on playing and learning together.
Families will find a playground with ramps, accessible equipment and a rubber surface, along with fully accessible parking and restrooms. The first phase opened in fall 2010, and the Trent Green Family Field and playground followed in fall 2013. Plans for the final phase include two more synthetic grass fields for multipurpose use and a walking trail around the complex. Community support continues to help the Y create opportunities for adaptive athletes to grow, connect with teammates and enjoy the experience of being on the field.

FAQ YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
The complex is designed for young athletes with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities. It is the only accessible sports complex in the Kansas City area, which means athletes who are often left watching from the sidelines can get on the field and play. Families, siblings and volunteers are part of it too.
The baseball field has a synthetic rubber surface with flat bases, so wheelchairs and other mobility devices roll across it without catching, and the dugout has no stairs or curbs to navigate. The turf fields use synthetic grass that stays level and flat for soccer and flag football. The parking lot has no curbs going into the complex, and the restrooms and playground are fully accessible.
Challenger baseball is the heart of the complex, and the synthetic turf fields host soccer and flag football. Programming runs through the Y’s Adaptive & Challenger and Youth Sports departments, so seasons and age groups change through the year.
No. The Pryor Sports Complex is a program site rather than a membership center, so participation runs through registration for a specific season or program rather than a facility membership. A Y membership opens up wellness centers, pools and classes at our centers, but it is not what gets your athlete on the field here.
