Let's Move Outside
Let's Move Outside is an initiative of former First Lady Michelle Obama, led by the Department of the Interior and in collaboration with the YMCA of the USA and the National League of Cities. The goal of Let's Move Outside is to bridge the growing disconnect between young people and the great outdoors through the four pillars of play, learn, serve and work.
Youth and families learn new skills, engage with others and develop dedication to the great outdoors through service projects, recreation and environmental education. Programs are held in community green spaces, local parks and public lands. By offering consistent access to these public lands, Let’s Move! Outside is helping to inspire and foster nature lovers for life.
Youth Volunteer Corps of Greater Kansas City and Let's Move Outside are now partnering together to make a greater impact in our community through youth engagement and service learning.
Here are a few examples of recent Let's Move Outside events.
- Revolving Green Around the Blue - cleaning up litter and removing invasive plant species from the Blue River. In partnership with the Blue River Watershed Association, Kansas City Water Services, Jackson County Parks and Recreation, and Revolved KC, volunteers removed approximately 28 pounds of trash and removed a truck bed full of honeysuckle.
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Nature Walk - a restorative walk along Brush Creek led by a trained naturalist on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
