Making an Impact

Summer of Service engages youth in rewarding service projects that are challenging, rewarding, fun and educational through Youth Volunteer Corps, a program hosted by the Y. Find a service project any time of year through the Youth Volunteer Corps website.

AGES: 11-18
DAYS: Monday-Friday
TIME: 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
FEES: $79-$89 / week

Teens can make a difference in their community this summer. Youth Volunteer Corps, hosted by the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, offers weekly service opportunities for youth ages 11-18. Each project includes icebreakers, team-builders, and service-learning lessons. 

Financial assistance is available. 

There is a one-time program registration fee of $20. 

Transportation is available for select projects. Drop-off locations include the Cleaver Family YMCA, Paul Henson Family YMCA and YMCA Youth Development Services office.

This incredible SUPER expansive facility has endless possibilities and impacts the community in a unique way. Youth will be helping to maintain the property, helping set up and tear down for projects, clearing trail, and much more!

This thrift store welcomes volunteer service, wanting every volunteer to use their gifts and talents, to be comfortable and enjoy their time spent at our store. While volunteering you will have the opportunity to make new friendships, take initiative for leadership. For your dedication and selflessness, you will help Blessings Abound maintain its mission to aid those in need. Volunteers can expect to organize the thrift store and food distribution centers and participate in dynamic service learning activities in between. Service learning will be based on poverty and homelessness.

The Mission of Drumm Farm is to provide a nurturing environment that inspires and yields lifelong success of children and young adults.The Vision of Drumm Farm is helping children in foster care, homeless young adults and those aging out of foster care build successful lives by providing programs and services that support forever family environments, emotional and physical well-being, educational opportunities and personal growth. Drumm staff and children plant a 4-acre garden and care for livestock. Children on campus participate in farm operations, giving them an opportunity to learn valuable life skills. The public is invited to shop at Drumm Market to help teach these skills to the children. Youth Volunteers can expect to aid in these activities, and participate in relevant service learning.

Recycle, reduce, reuse. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore was created as a fundraising branch of Habitat for Humanity Kansas City. By salvaging building materials from people who don't need them anymore, they are saving space in our landfills, giving the public affordable materials, and allowing everyone to rebuild and restore our community. Volunteers will help sort through donated items at the store, measure materials, help customers, and may use hammers and power tools.

This project will be aiding in therapeutic riding for children with physical and psychological challenges. Under the direction of the instructor youth will be directly involved with working with the horses, cleaning, and preparing the farm for its many therapeutic classes. This project requires a mandatory training on June 6 and the facility.

Hollis is 153 acres of secluded wooded land located 20 minutes west of downtown Kansas City with facilities for retreats, workshops, meetings and outdoor activities. Over five miles of hiking trails crisscross the property and East Mission Creek flows from its north to south. If you enjoy helping others, and directly impacting the lives of many different individuals this is the project for you!

Make a lasting impression on a resident! This project includes direct interaction, helping prepare for daily events, and assisting the facility in cleaning and decorating for various events.

Serving the homeless population with meals and conversation, or by working in the kitchen preparing delicious food. The project is one where you feel like you're impacting and making a difference right up front.

Youth will be working at various parks all over KCMO and KCK. The end of the week on some will be at a water park! A fun opportunity to impact MANY parks in the area!

This is a unique NEW camp offered this year only two weeks this summer.  Transportation will be from the Youth Development office in Overland Park. The park is located in Lawson MO and is going to be filled with work AND fun extra activities all week! Extra activities available at the park for the kids could include swimming, hiking, tour of the house, tour of the mill, work in an heirloom garden, fishing, kayaking, and nature/history programs provided by our staff. The park needs help with working on the trails and painting. 


Love Youngsters? Have a thought of teaching? This could be the project for you! Youth will be creating a lesson to execute, assisting teachers in the classroom, and working throughout the Head Start location!

Volunteering at the Overland Park Arboretum is an amazing opportunity to help maintain this beautiful park. Youth will be weeding, clearing grass, setting up for events, and planting new flowers! The end of the week will include assisting in the "water fun day" this facility puts on for area youth!

Assist with a variety of projects throughout the 14 acre museum area. Duties may include gardening, painting of buildings, chinking of log cabins and more. Lots of weekend projects and events throughout the year!
